Principals

SmartHaT was originally a venture of Harry A. Hoyen and Yen T. Tan. Hence the "HaT" part of the name comes from Hoyen and Tan. Some friends have said that the "Smart" must refer to us, but that's too presumptuous, as it better describes associates and clients. We have worked together before, on the theory of space-charge layers in silver halides - a research program that generated some excitement and many questions. Joined by Ronald R. Metras, our latest effort should generate more excitement, fewer questions, and more solutions.

In the present venture, there are no grand theories on silver halides, just practical solutions to "real world" problems. We have developed an ensemble of computer tools to enhance the effectiveness of the live teacher, improve teacher-student and student-student communications through a modular system called CELS (Computer Enhanced Learning Systems). Using CELS, we can extend the actual classroom hours to adults whose need for practical training is limited by the time available for live presentations. It is used effectively in Elder Care Solutions.

Yen, a graduate of Columbia University with a BS in Materials Science and Yale University with a Ph.D. in Chemistry, has worked in research for Eastman Kodak Co., Sterling-Winthrop Pharmaceuticals, and Sandia National Laboratories. Much of this work has involved the use of super-computers in atomistic simulations of materials. In addition to research, Yen has taught at the Rochester Institute of Technology for over ten years.

Yen has organized the suite of courses called Elder Care Solutions, where he has focused his efforts on senior Housing Options with Gerry Stryker. Yen's interest in elder care began when he moved his mother to Rochester and had to make decisions on living arrangements and health aide care. By combining his firsthand experience as a consumer with the knowledge of an aging professional like Gerry, Yen wants to help others in making sound decisions for their elderly family members.

Harry holds a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Cornell University and BS and MS degrees from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, where he currently serves on its Advisory Board. While at Eastman Kodak Co., he applied his knowledge and experience to photographic research and was responsible for many technical advances. As an innovator, he made significant technical contributions in areas of imaging, solid surfaces and interfaces. Harry soon recognized that successful product commercialization is best accomplished by coupling innovative ideas with manufacturing and customer know how. After working as a Senior Laboratory Manager, he was appointed a Senior Business Unit Director for technology and commercialization. In addition to being the author of numerous patents and technical papers, he was successful in introducing new products as well as reducing R&D cycle time and manufacturing costs. Over the last several years, Harry has consulted with various companies in the technical aspects of materials interfaces. As an entrepreneur, he has applied his technical and business expertise as one of the founding Principals of SmartHaT, Inc.

A recent addition to SmartHat, Ron is a graduate of the Rochester Institute of Technology and the International Management Development School in Lussane, Switzerland, with a MBA in Finance and Accounting. Ron has over 35 years of experience in accounting, finance, taxation, and human resources. Following a successful career with Eastman Kodak, he embarked on his second career in financial planning and business consulting. Ron is now returning to adult education, an area of his first love and training, with financial courses designed to save you money and help plan for your future. His courses are Basic and Advanced Financial Planning and Family Financial Management. His ideas on money management for the elderly are in Elder Care Solutions.
