Introduction to
Long Term Care Financing

When SmartHat asked me to provide a teaching unit on long term care financing, I realized that I faced a challenge. There are very few black and white answers when it comes to the question "Do I need long term care insurance?" When I work with individuals, couples, and families to help them to discover their answer to this question, I have no list of questions that I can go through to provide one answer that fits every person. This unit is designed to assist you in better understanding long term care insurance and to begin to explore if this might be something for you to investigate further.

Unlike life insurance, long term care insurance is a bit more complicated. There are a variety of options to choose from and a variety of reasons to choose each option. A critical part of the process is discovering the right Long Term Care Specialist to work with. The role of the Specialist is to ask you the right questions so that she may assist you to:

1. Determine if long term care insurance is right for you.
2. Choose the options best suited to your needs.
3. Provide you with companies having the options you need.

I recommend using the following criteria when choosing the person to work with you.

Someone with whom you feel comfortable.

Someone who gives you as much time and space as you need to make the decision that you feel good about, whether or not you choose to buy long term care insurance.
